Chances are at some point in your life you have looked in the mirror and wondered what it would be like to have a different hair color. Perhaps you have wondered what your actual real hair color is. Most people have colored their hair or at least thought about it, which is why one of the fastest growing services in hair salons is coloring.

If you are thinking about coloring your hair there are a few things that you should know ahead of time. Simply calling a salon and making an appointment for a “color” is not going to get your far. Here are a few tips to help you decide what might be right for you.

A single process color is the most common choice. This process includes coloring all of the hair in a single color. There are 3 types of color that can be chosen, demi-permanent, semi-permanent, and permanent.

Permanent color is the only choice if you are trying to cover up the gray hairs on your head. In addition, permanent color contains ammonia, which is needed in order to lighten up a hair color.

Semi and demi permanent colors do not use ammonia and are gentler on the hair. Semi-permanent colors are non-committal, which means that in a certain number of washes they will be gone from your hair. This is a good choice for someone who is not sure if they will like the color or not. It is also a great option if you are someone who wants to change the color of their hair on a regular basis.

Highlights and low lights are another coloring option that is available. Highlights will add lighter strands of hair throughout, giving it a sun kissed look. Lowlights are the opposite of highlights and create darker strands of hair throughout the head.
